You can install, delete, install again, copy different files and the data is written on your hard drive in different places. This is a permanent process on a computer, the HDD stores information in different places as long as we use the PC.
After a while, the computer needs more time to retrieve the data from the hard disk, because is written in different places on the hard drive. By defragmenting the computer, basically you re-arrange the data and Windows will retrieve it faster.
It is recommended to make a defragmentation from time to time, especially if you feel that your PC works slower than usual. Also, you can set an automatic scheduled task for this.
Windows 7
Method 1: Using built-in Disk Defragmenter
Windows 7 already includes a program to defragment the computer. This utility is called Disk Defragmenter.
1. Go to Disk Defragmenter
Go to Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools and click on Disk Defragmenter.
Alternatively, you can click on Start, then search for Disk Defragmenter.
2. Defragment
Select the hard drive, then click Defragment Disk
3. Schedule
Also, you can set a schedule so the defragmentation will run automatically.
Method 2: Using Defraggler
This is a free and modern program.
1. Download Defraggler
Download and install it.
2. Defrag

Windows 8
Method 1: Using built-in option
Windows 8 includes an utility to defrag computer’s hard drives.
1. Go to Search

2. Go to Defragment

3. Defrag
You should repeat the process for each hard drive.
